How to fix the float on the fishing line?

The float is an important part of fishing tackle, because it is with its help that the fisherman learns about the bite. But despite the external simplicity of the design and its fastening, the installation of a float requires special knowledge and skills. If they are not observed, the float will not perform its functions. Therefore, for each fisherman it is important to know where and how to fix the float on the fishing line.

Design and function of the float

To understand how to properly fix the float on the fishing line, first of all, you need to disassemble its design. Most floats consist of the following parts:

  • Body. It is located in the middle and is usually the widest part of the product;
  • Antenna. Placed on top of the body. It is a thin elongated rod;
  • Keel. It is located below the body. Outwardly, it looks like a small diameter tube.

Floats of this type are often painted in two contrasting shades. However, not all floats have such components in their design. So, for example, products from a goose feather are a solid rod, which is conveniently painted by fishermen in different colors. There are also special bubbles for surface fishing on carp. Their design consists exclusively of a solid body.

Recently, most of the floats sold are equipped with a ring at the tip of the keel. This design greatly simplifies the installation of products on the fishing line. And for floats that do not have rings, there are special adapters that are easily and firmly worn on the keel.

The float has many features.

It is incorrect to assume that the only function of the float is the bite alarm. The main functions of the product also include:

  • Holding a sinker, as well as a hook with a bait at a certain depth;
  • Providing game bait in the pond;
  • Elimination of water splashes during casting.

Also, the float takes an active part in casting bait, providing the necessary range and accuracy of flight.

Necessary elements for fastening

To properly fix the float on the fishing line, the following materials and tools may be required:

  • Float;
  • Rubber, silicone or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) shrink tubing, or cambric, which can be used as stoppers;
  • Monoprofile thread;
  • Triple and single swivels equipped with winding rings;
  • Thin wire, best made of copper;
  • Small lead shot;
  • Knife, nippers or scissors;
  • Pliers or tweezers.
Types of Floats

It is important to consider that the list of materials and tools necessary for fastening the float primarily depends on the installation method chosen by the fisherman.

Features of the choice of the fastening point of the float on the fishing line

The point at which the float will be mounted on the fishing rod, by any of the methods, is always chosen empirically. In this case, it is important to know approximately the depth of the reservoir at the proposed fishing point. It is also necessary to take into account the behavior and depth of fish habitat in a particular fishing season.

The float installation point should be such that the sinker can lower the hook with the bait to the depth necessary for the bite.

It is important that the cargo used is invisible, otherwise the fish will be afraid to approach the bait. The weight of the weight should easily lower the float and bait into the water, but not be too heavy.

Otherwise, the indicator will be immersed in water above the permissible level, and most bites will go unnoticed. If the weight is insufficient, the float will also show insufficient sensitivity for effective fishing.

Types and methods of fastening

There are two ways to attach the float to the fishing line:

  • Deaf;
  • Sliding.

The deaf mounting method involves installing the alarm at one point, the position of which can only be changed by applying physical effort. If the float is correctly attached to the fishing line, it cannot move independently. The sliding way of mounting the float implies the possibility of free movement of the detector in the water along the fishing line.

When using this type of mounting, the indicator acts as a depth lock at which the bait will be. Fastening the float at one point on the fishing line can be done in several ways. However, the simplest installation option is to use nipples, or silicone cambrics. It is carried out in this way:

  1. A nipple suitable for antenna and keel diameter is cut into pieces of 7-10 mm in length.
  2. The resulting pieces are strung on a fishing line.
  3. The antenna and keel of the float are pushed into pieces of cambric, so that the indicator is attached to the fishing line at one selected point.

In the process of stringing pieces of nipple, special attention should be paid to the design of the float. If it is equipped with an eyelet for fixing in the body, it is important to string pieces of cambric in the order of the fixing points. First of all, a segment should be threaded under the antenna. After that, you can thread the line in your ear. And only after all these actions, is the installation of a fastener designed to fix the keel.

If the alarm has a built-in eyelet for fixing, then the float is fastened with a nipple only on the keel of the product. In the case when the design of the signaling device does not involve the use of an eyelet, the float is fixed using one piece of cambric worn on the antenna and two segments that fix the keel. In this case, the lower part of the nipple worn on the keel should protrude a few millimeters beyond the edges of the keel pole. Fulfillment of this simple requirement will protect the fishing line from tangling in the area of the float during casting.

For floats with a fixing eye located on the keel, it is necessary to thread the fishing line into the ringlet and fix the signaling device at the selected point with a running unit. This method will allow you to easily move the float when you need to adjust the depth of fishing. And in the case when the depth of fish activity in the pond is known in advance, it is recommended to use the deaf method of fixing the float using a triple swivel with a fastener.

In order to correctly fix the float on the fishing line using the sliding method of fixation, it is important to correctly approach the selection of signaling devices, because not every float is designed for such fasteners. For sliding fastening, floats with a through hole along their entire body, or equipped with a keel ring, are suitable.

Sliding mounting method

The installation process has the following sequence of actions:

  1. On the fishing line at a suitable point, the upper limiter of the stroke of the float is installed.
  2. Through the hole in the detector, the product is put on the fishing line.
  3. At a suitable point, under the keel of the float, a lower travel stop is mounted.

Due to the signaling device's ability to arbitrarily move along the fishing line, the following requirements are put forward to the stoppers used in the installation process:

  • These elements should have a dense but soft texture;
  • The dimensions of the stoppers should allow the fishing line to freely pass through the tackle rings when casting.

The lower limiter should be installed as close as possible to the main weight of the gear. And so that the locking elements do not slip, special locking units are imposed over the upper and under the lower limiter.

Float adjustment

The process of adjusting the float is extremely important when preparing gear. An incorrectly installed signaling device will not only not perform its functions, but will also provide an improper location of the bait, which will cause the bite to break. At the same time, the technique for adjusting the float directly depends on the chosen method of fixing it.

If the type of float installation is chosen deaf, then the bite signaling device simply moves along the fishing line manually up or down to the required depth level. In which direction it is necessary to move the float, the fisherman determines empirically at the place of fishing. To do this, the equipment is thrown into the water, after which the position of the float is evaluated. If the product lies on water, then the sinker is located at the bottom of the reservoir and the selected float height is too large. In this case, the indicator must be moved down closer to the bait.

During the sliding fixation of the float on the fishing line, in the process of changing the depth, the product moves independently in the range allowed by the stoppers. However, if you need to change this range of movements, the fisherman only needs to move the upper stop along the fishing line.
